Pancateca [panca - θήκη (thḗkē)]
Pancateca is a collection of benches designed to interact with the ancient dry-stone walls on the slopes of Mount Touro in Capri, creating a contemporary exedra that integrates seamlessly into the landscape. These walls, which have shaped the Mediterranean terrain for millennia, are the life-lines of the region, embodying a humanized and lived-in landscape.
The design of Pancateca invites visitors to become an active part of this landscape. Rather than presenting a conventional arrangement of benches, the project offers a gathering point that encourages immersion in the multiple layers of meaning embedded in the landscape. The intentional absence of curation of a pre-acquired view allows each individual to actively engage with the environment on their own terms, fostering a personal and conscious connection with the territory.
